Plagioclase feldspar chemical formula

Virginia Geological Survey - Feldspar

Plagioclase is the name of a group of feldspar minerals that form a solid solution series ranging from pure albite, Na (AlSi 3 O 8), to pure anorthite, Ca (Al 2 Si 2 O 8). Minerals in this series are a homogenous mixture of albite and anorthite Ca2+ can substitute for Na+ because they are similar in size and charge neutrality is maintained by substituting Al3+ for Si4+. Composition of Plagioclase is described in terms of Anorthite with An + Ab = 100. The solid solution equilibrium equation can be written as Na +1 Si +4 <=> Ca +2 Al +3 (Nesse 2012)

Plagioclase is a series of tectosilicate (framework silicate) minerals within the feldspar group. Rather than referring to a particular mineral with a specific chemical composition, plagioclase is a continuous solid solution series, more properly known as the plagioclase feldspar series. This was first shown by the German mineralogist Johann Friedrich Christian Hessel (1796-1872) in 1826 Plagioclase Feldspar. Plagioclase is series of framework silicate minerals in feldspar group. Plagioclase is a continuous series of solid solutions known as the plagioclase feldspar series, rather than a specific mineral with a particular chemical composition. The series ranges from albite to anorthite endmembers (with respective compositions. The Plagioclase series is a group of related feldspar minerals that essentially have the same formula but vary in their percentage of sodium and calcium. Albite and Anorthite are the end members of the series, with the intermediary minerals Oligoclase, Andesine, Labradorite, and Bytownite. The acclaimed Dana's System of Mineralogy lists the intermediary members as individual minerals, whereas.

The chemical composition of feldspars includes alcalic metals, aluminum, silica and oxygen. The general chemical formula is a bit complicated (K,Na) 1-x (Ca,Ba) x (Si 3-x Al 1+x O 8). This complexity is caused by presence of both monovalent and divalent cations which require more complicated heterovalent substitution Chemical Formula. (Na,Ca)Al1-2Si3-2O8. Composition. Sodium calcium aluminum silicate. The ratio of sodium to calcium is about 9:1. The amount of aluminum atoms are between 1 and 2, and the amount of silicon atoms are between 3 and 2. In the Plagioclase Feldspar series, Oligoclase contains between 70 and 90 percent Albite (Ab), and between 10.

Solid solutions between albite and anorthite are called plagioclase, or, more properly, plagioclase feldspar

The plagioclase feldspars form a solid solution series between the end members of pure albite (NaAlSi 3 O 8) and pure anorthite (CaAl 2 Si 2 O 8). The alkali feldspars form a solid solution series between pure albite and potassium sanidine (KAlSi 3 O 8). A list of feldspar minerals with their chemical compositions can be seen in Table 1 Ideally, chemical composition of the plagioclase group varies from NaAlSi 3 O 8 (albite) to CaAl 2 Si 2 O 8 (anorthite); however, some potassium is usually present, especially in soda-rich plagioclase. Specific names have been applied to different parts of the compositional range

This diagram shows how feldspar minerals are classified on the basis of their chemical composition. The sequence of minerals along the base of the triangle represents the solid solution series of plagioclase between albite and anorthite. In thin section, plagioclase commonly shows the characteristic albite polysynthetic twinning Alkali feldspar has the formula KAlSi 3 O 8, potassium aluminosilicate. The formula actually is a blend ranging from all sodium (albite) to all potassium (microcline), but albite is also one endpoint in the plagioclase series so we classify it there Feldspars are a group of rock-forming aluminium tectosilicate minerals, containing sodium, calcium, potassium or barium. The most common members of the feldspar group are the plagioclase (sodium-calcium) feldspars and the alkali (potassium-sodium) feldspars. Feldspars make up about 60% of the Earth's crust, and 41% of the Earth's continental crust by weight What is the chemical formula of feldspar? Chemical composition. All the rock-forming feldspars are aluminosilicate minerals with the general formula AT4O8 in which A = potassium, sodium, or calcium (Ca); and T = silicon (Si) and aluminum (Al), with a Si:Al ratio ranging from 3:1 to 1:1. Plagioclase ranges in composition from Na[AlSi 3 O 8] to calcium Ca[Al 2 Si 2 O 8], or sodium to calcium aluminosilicate. Pure Na[AlSi 3 O 8] is albite, and pure Ca[Al 2 Si 2 O 8] is anorthite. The plagioclase feldspars are named according to the following scheme, where the numbers are the percentage of calcium expressed as anorthite (An) The quartz and feldspars account for 2.3-22.7 wt% of the samples. X-ray diffraction analyses detect both plagioclase feldspar and potassium feldspar. Plagioclase is albite-rich and abundant in the top ~ 7.4 m of the core. Potassium feldspar mainly occurs below ~ 10.4 m Retrieval of standard chemical formulas for minerals from chemical analyses is an exercise in (a) conversion of units of quantity and (b) normalization of sums to match the commonly used formula conventions. The basic steps for formula calculation are: Divide the weight percentage of each oxide by the formula weight of that oxide

Plagioclase feldspars are the most common feldspar minerals because calcium is somewhat more common in the crust than potassium (3.6 and 2.8 percent of the crust, respectively). Plagioclase feldspars form a continuous solid solution between Ab and An endmembers at high temperature, but the replacement of ions needs to be coupled because of the. plagioclases. The plagioclase feldspar names were created many years ago; these names are no longer considered mineral species, but are still in widespread use and therefore are used here for convenience. Albite refers to a sodium-rich plagioclase containing up to10% of the calcium component. The composition range between 10% and 30% calcium is. feldspars (the response to hydrostatic pressure) [e.g., Angel, 2004] are not sufficient to fully deter-mine the elastic modulus or compliance tensors.
